Poverty looms in the Isle of Riches

If the PAP cannot improve the lives of the middle class and the poor, it could face a crisis in the 2011 election.

When the republic celebrates its national day next month with its traditional stirring parade and patriotic songs, the mood of many of its citizens will be less than joyful.

On Aug 9 they will try to put aside an unusual combination of bad news – including crushing inflation and threat of a global recession – to wave flags and watch the fireworks.

But it will be with a heavy heart. To put it simply, Singapore's 43rd birthday is coming at a bad time, possibly one of the worst in decades.

Ironically, the economy of the richest nation in South-East Asia had been firing on all cylinders in recent years.

A booming construction sector, record tourist arrivals and a fast-growing financial sector have contributed to a gross domestic product growth of nearly 8% last year.

The number of millionaires (in US dollar terms) increased to 77,000, making Singapore the seventh in the world in growth of people with high net worth.

That was the recent past. The present is less cheery. A Newsweek correspondent who visited here in 2007 asked: "If the island's economy is booming, why are so many citizens worse off than they were 10 years ago?"

Even as the country prospered, the lives of lower middle class and the poor have become tougher over the past decade. It has in fact become bleak for the elderly and unskilled, who work as cleaners and labourers, admits the Ministry of Manpower.

Their wages have remained stagnant for 10 years, unlike other groups such as managers, professionals, sales and service workers, as well as plant and machine operators.

Last year, managers – the best-paid group – earned 4.86 times more than cleaners and labourers. The gap has widened in 10 years. It was 4.13 times in 1997.

A government committee on low-income earners says 300,000 workers, or 20% of the population earn S$1,200 (RM2,760) or less a month – half of them S$900 or less.

"Income gaps are widening," said Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, while Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew admitted that a narrowing was not likely any time soon because of cheap labour from China and India.

Inflation, the worst in 26 years, has further aggravated the problem since it is affecting the poorer class more than others.

The wage gap has become a particularly acute problem among older and lower-skilled workers, who are among the most disenchanted population in Singapore.

Commentators believe that the political fortunes of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) are tied to its ability to tackle this dilemma at a time when Lee's influential presence enters its sunset years.

If inflation worsens further or if the PAP cannot improve the lives of the middle class and the poor, it could face a crisis in the 2011 election.

An unusually frank write-up in the government-controlled Channel News Asia last year said that middle class stagnation could lead to social instability.

"Anecdotally, it seems to me that our society is already beginning to fray at the edges. There is an increasing coarseness to life," the writer said.

"People have no more time to be considerate to others; even scavengers have to become pushy for fear of losing out to competitors."

On a possible scenario if poverty spreads, he sounded a warning to the contended rich: "Even if you close your eyes to vagrants around us, you can't avoid breathing the air that you share with them.

"Even if you drive around in a sealed BMW or Lexus, one day, homeless kids will catch up with you at traffic junctions offering to clean your windshield.

"Or you find yourself taking the long walk to your parked car, because the shorter route takes you past suspicious-looking men who might be desperate enough to snatch your bag.

"I wonder if the decay has begun to set in, even as we continue to boast of high GDP growth rates."

The island state has become a rich oasis with pockets of rising poverty, where the homeless sleep at void decks or beaches.

Workers in their 60s or 70s clean toilets and sweep floors, instead of enjoying their retirement with grandchildren as is befitting the world's seventh richest nation (in per capita GDP).

To say the government is not worried is understating the fact. It has set up a special body to study measures to improve the earnings of these 300,000 people.

Ideologically, Lee has always rejected subsidies or welfare schemes for the needy. The younger ministers, led by his son Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, have, however, been tweaking the no-welfare system by dishing out more cash and topping up savings of the lower-income workers.

Called Workfare, it provides hundreds to thousands of dollars to poorer families. Much of it has, however, been eaten up by the higher cost of living.

Some economists have called for a new social safety net to meet Singapore's modern needs. Yeoh Lam Keong suggests identifying a basket of goods and services that is necessary for individuals and families to enjoy a minimum standard of living.

Based on this index, the government should formulate new policies to help low-income earners counter the effects of globalisation.

"We are in a strong fiscal position and if any country in the world can afford to find a better solution to deal with this growing income divide, it is Singapore," Yeoh said.

how are things going? life is pretty dull for me here. i guess we can have a class (movie) outing sometime in the month of december, before most of the guys go for NS, and the gals, maybe, job attachments.

we can watch a show at the cathay cineleisure, and take advantage of the special ticket price for student concession card holders (december is the last valid month for our ez-link cards!).

or we can take advantage of any of the ongoing cathay promotions like:
1) buy 3 tickets get 1 ticket free
2) 12% discount off tickets all day

Alright guys! The exams are coming, so I decided to post this! Has been on my blog for ages, but guess most didn't catch it.

Ways to relieve stress/anger:

Punch someone, or something (eg your pillow).
Scream. So what if it's barbaric? Who cares?
Daydream and build some complex fantasies. They always help in relieving stress.
Go hiking! Guys, let's go for a tree-top walk! Stop vetoing such a brilliant idea!
Read. Yes, read and get yourself lost in a fantasy world, and read about others' miseries and forget about yours.
Be cynical, 'coz when you are cynical, you will never believe you can be stressed.
Help me clean up my room. This is by far the most effective one.
Listen to music. Avoid 'emo' songs, or face the additional fear of feeling much worse than before.
Don't drink coffee, according to 'experts'. But drink coffee nevetheless, 'coz it's nice to drink.
Play some games. The best games to play would be the violent shooting games. They are so very fun to play when you are stressed.
Engage in sadistic activities. But please don't take it out on real life people or objects. Please stick to non-living objects like your pillow (my favourite) and your bolster (my second favourite).
Talk to me, but please catch me in a good mood. I will then be willing to entertain you with stupid nonsense, or just listen to you.
More typical advice includes writing your frustrations out on paper then dumping it into some clear glass. Doubt it will work, but you can always try.
Read satires. They are just fantastic stuff that will cheer you up immediately (well, it worked for me).
Coop yourself up at home to study. Have you heard of reverse psychology? Perhaps one can trick the mind into believing that it's a good remedy to stress.

hello everyone!

i know that all of you are on intense studying mode and i pray that all of you are still managing well and good from all that intense mugging.

so as to give all of us a well-deserved break after the common test, i suggest that the class should just let our hair down and have a weekend getaway sometime next month (or during the june holidays).

thus, please allow me to propose a crazy idea in the midst of this intense mugging period.

*drum rolls*

i will be able to get a place for a weekend stay for the class in the grand copthorne waterfront hotel. i think it will be fun as we can REALLY mess up the place without being watched by BIG BROTHER. i will really love for the class to get together and just let our hair down, and have a party that every single one of us will be able to attend to have fun (no books allowed!).

the tentative date that i am putting forth for a class hangover will be on the first weekend of the june holidays. (ie: 26-27 May 2007).

i think we will be staying in a superior plus room. i hope it can comfortably fit all of us in (considering 10-15 people). i suppose we can either stay indoors and play games or use their swimming pool/jacuzzi and tennis courts.

so that are all the ideas from me for the next possible class outing.

Here's a very gentle reminder that you guys needa come up with your 1st draft of the 3 best (CCA) achievements to be submitted to Mrs. Chong via email. It was supposed to be due last Friday (last day of school) but I suppose our dearest funky CT wouldn't mind if we handed it up to her latest the end of this holiday week (ie, Sunday 18th Mar). That should be nice and lenient enough right?

ahwell. ive been wanting to blog here for a while, just to tell y'all how i felt about leaving a01e. it might get a bit draggy, so cynics like GCZ, just.. click that cross you see at the top right hand corner of yr screen and shush. okay im kidding((:

weeelll. its difficult to put feelings into words, but here i go.

to say i was apprehensive and hesitant to change class would be an understatement. its the fear of the unknown. i didnt want to change. i wasnt happy in my old class, but id gotten comfortable. i told mr tai to let me change in term2, but he said no. i was pretty anxious about how it'd turn out.

i remember the day i changed class ever so clearly. i went to the parade sq, asked some people at row47 whether this was a01e, and they were uber welcoming and nice.

the first names i remember were liyue and liyana. i thought they sounded too alike. hahah.

i remember the comfortable laughter that went around, and i knew i'd be safe here.

then later when i got to know you lot, i KNEW i hadnt made a wrong choice. you guys were God-given blessings.

because of you lot, i slowly stopped dreading every single day of school.

ive never seen a lot as accepting as you guys. (and girls)

i really owe y'all a lott. you made my days in rj happyy and something to look forward to. thank youu all.

The class party is over. so sad. it was fun but i guess im a lousy host. thnk god my mum helped me with sooo many stuff. hope u guys enjoyed the party. i know it was kinda of boring earlier in the party. but it was much more fun later.
